Currently flows are still fairly low for this time of year, around 2,000 cfs as of March 26 and the river should stay in fairly good shape all week. Some rain is expected later in the week, which may bump up the flows a bit. The summer steelhead run for this year has begun, although we are still only in the very early stages and it will take a few more weeks until these fish arrive in the basin in numbers. The latest counts at Willamette Falls are 170 summer steelhead as of March 24. Many of these fish are destined for the South Santiam. The first spring chinook have also arrived but their numbers are still very low.
Summer steelhead can generally be found throughout the upper basin below Foster Reservoir, especially above Waterloo Park. Fishing is generally best below 3,000 cfs.
The entire river is now closed to trout fishing. It will re-open on May 22 and continue through Oct. 31.
