Bird hunting this holiday weekend

Forest grouse and mourning dove opened statewide this week, and quail is open in western Oregon. It’s gonna be hot and dry this weekend, so hunt early mornings or late evenings when it’s cooler, look for birds near water sources and be aware of the extreme fire danger in many parts of the state.

Check out what to expect in this week’s Game Bird Hunting section of the Recreation Report.

Sign up for a youth pheasant hunt in September

These hunts are a great opportunity for new hunters to experience bird hunting for the first time and for more experienced youth to get ready for upcoming hunting season. There are several hunts throughout the state. To find one in your area, check out the workshop and events page on MyODFW.com.

Fishing tips for the hot, dry weekend ahead

With the hot, dry weather we’ve been having, fishing this weekend could be tough. But not impossible! Both trout and warmwater fish will be seeking out cooler water, so look for them:

  • Early in the morning before the heat of the day. This also will help you beat the swimming, paddlecraft and kayak crowd.
  • In lakes and ponds with deeper water and/or at higher elevations.
  • In the cooler headwaters of rivers and streams. Look for fish in deep pools at the end of riffles, or in shaded areas. If water levels are low fish might be skittish, so be sure you’re using light tackle and keeping a low profile.

Ocean non-selective coho opens this Friday and Saturday

Check out these 10 tips for targeting ocean coho.

Clamming, and some crabbing, remains closed to nonresidents

Clamming and mussel harvest remain closed to nonresidents along the entire Oregon coast. Crabbing is open to nonresidents from Cape Falcon (between Seaside and Tillamook) south to the CA border.
