Seasonal aquatic vegetation is presenting shore anglers some challenges. Anglers in boats are having a little more success. Bass are taking dark-colored plastic worms and crawdad imitations. Rainbow trout are hitting rainbow-colored PowerBait or night crawlers in the early mornings.
Boaters are chasing striper boils throughout the Boulder Basin and the Overton Arm. Shad swimbaits, topwater lures, and spinnerbaits are all producing fish, many in the 2- to 5-pound range. Shore anglers are reporting black bass activity near Echo Bay. Bone-colored topwater lures and Rat-L-Traps are tempting fish out of grassy coves.
Rainbow trout catches are being reported from the Willow Beach fishing pier. Spinners and night crawlers are good choices. Black bass anglers are targeting fish in coves north of the Cottonwood Basin. Soft plastics craws, bugs, and worms are the baits of choice. Watermelon, brown, and green pumpkin are popular colors. Striper boils have not been reported but are expected to pick up in the coming weeks near Davis Dam. Umbrella rigs are working well in the meantime.
Anglers are enjoying striped bass, black bass, bluegill, and catfish action along the Colorado River. Stripers are hitting anchovies and crankbaits in shad or trout patterns from Davis Dam through Casino Row. Fish are weighing between 2 and 6 pounds. Black bass in the 1- to 2-pound range are looking for soft plastics south of Big Bend State Recreation Area. Catfish anglers are using a combination of anchovies and corn mixtures in marshy coves.
Haymeadow and Cold Springs have been very good for bass, fair for crappie, and hit or miss for trout. With waters shallow and temperatures hot, early morning hours are the best time for fishing. Vegetation is taking over the shallows. Using weedless hooks and small barbless flies helps minimize plant hookups. Adams-McGill is producing a few nice trout on Rooster Tails and bass on plastics. Anglers are finding trout on Dacey using spinners and flies.
