2022-23 game bird hunting forecast

A district-by-district look at how this year’s upland bird and waterfowl seasons are shaping up.

Best bets for weekend fishing

  • Look for trout fishing to improve almost across the board (or state) with the onset of cooler, fall temperatures.
  • Don’t forget bass and other warmwater fish. Though fish may have started moving to deeper water in some locations, they are still actively feeding.
  • In the coastal rivers and streams, salmon are staging in the bays and estuaries getting ready to move upstream. Let’s all hope for some rain to get them started.
  • In the Willamette Valley, anglers are probably targeting coho in the Clackamas, Sandy and Santiam rivers.
  • Anglers are still catching both ocean salmon and tuna. Though not necessarily at the same time.
  • September kicks off the fall and winter crabbing season – it’s always better during months that end with the letter “r”.

Wildfires affecting fishing and hunting access

It’s wildfire season in Oregon, and fires are affecting both hunters and anglers. Our best advice is to know before you go. Check MyODFW.com to help find fire closures and restrictions. Anglers can check the zone sections for closures related to the Cedar Creek Fire in central Oregon and several fires in the Northeast Zone.
