Summer vacation + summer fishing – It all adds up

It's vacation season! It's summer fishing season! Why not put the two together? If you're camping, hiking or kayaking, take a rod with you. If you're looking for a daytrip, check out our Start Fishing page for lots of tips, techniques and places to go.‌

Some clamming reopens – Check before you go

Parts of the Oregon coast are being reopened to clamming where it's safe to do so. Always check the shellfish hotline before you go clamming or crabbing. Call 1-800-448-2474 or visit the ODA shellfish closures website for the most current information about shellfish safety closures.‌

Sign up for hunter education

The fall hunting season will be here sooner than you think. If you've got a young, would-be hunter that hopes to hunt for the first time this fall, help them sign up for hunter education now. Because the closer we get to opening days, the harder it will be to find an open class or field day. Here are the ways to take hunter education. ‌

Best bets for weekend fishing

Chinook, steelhead, trout and bass – they all apply.‌

  • Summer steelhead are in the Nestucca, Wilson and Siletz rivers.
  • Trout fishing continues to be good in several lakes in the upper Rogue Basin, including Howard, Hyatt and Lost Creek.
  • Anglers on Diamond Lake are still landing some large brown trout.
  • Anglers are still catching resident cutthroat trout in the Chetco, Elk and Sixes rivers, but look for more sea-run fish to start returning to rivers as the month progresses.
  • Hatchery summer steelhead fishing has been productive in the North Santiam, McKenzie and Middle Fork Willamette below Dexter.
  • Trout stocking has started to shift to some higher elevation lakes on the flanks of Mt. Hood.
  • It's time to target bass and other warmwater species – as water temps heat up, so will the fishing.
  • Anglers have been catching spring Chinook on the Snake River below Hells Canyon Dam.

These examples are for demonstration purposes only. Check the zone reports for details and more options.‌
