This long heat wave hasn't slowed down trout fishing too much on the lower Deschutes. Evening caddis hatches have been consistent and nymphing is good.
Wild steelhead counts over Bonneville are looking good for the Deschutes steelhead framework. The first threshold of 9,900 wild fish has already been met, meaning the fishery will remain open so long as counts maintain through the end of August. Our creelers have seen some steelhead come off the lower river and had numerous reports of wild fish caught.
The Thermal Angling Sanctuary closure is currently in effect from Moody Rapids downstream to the mouth. This section of the Deschutes is closed to all fishing and will reopen on Sept. 16.
