Best bets for holiday weekend fishing

Summer "unofficially" ends next week. All the more reason to take advantage of the upcoming three-day weekend to hit the water. Anglers will find plenty of options to choose from, including these:

  • Recent cool, wet weather should energize summer steelhead on the Wilson and Nestucca rivers.
  • On the Siletz, steelhead fishing is still going strong while Chinook have been showing up in the bay.
  • Flows and water temperatures in the lower Rogue River have been very good for fish migration and good numbers of fall Chinook, summer steelhead, half-pounders, and even some early coho are taking advantage of it.
  • With the cold rain last weekend, Howard Prairie should be in great shape for fishing this weekend.
  • Anglers are reporting excellent fishing for pre-spawn kokanee and lake trout at Odell Lake.
  • The Metolius River continues be excellent for mountain whitefish, redband trout and bull trout.
  • Brook trout fishing is excellent in the headwater areas of the Sycan, SF Sprague, North Fork Sprague, Long Creek, Upper Williamson, and Sevenmile Creek.
  • Fishing for redband trout on the Chewaucan, and the larger tributaries, should be good.
  • Fishing for bass and catfish in Brownlee Reservoir has been good with one angler catching a 28-inch channel cat recently.
  • Fishing for sea-run cutthroat trout has been good in coastal rivers and streams.
  • Late summer fishing in the hike-in lakes of the Cascade and Wallowa mountains, and the Sky Lakes and Mountain Lake wilderness areas can be very good.

This list if for demonstration purposed only. You'll find even more options in the zone reports.

Are you ready for your hunting season?
