The Lower Deschutes is fishing well all through the day stretch and through Maupin! While dry fly action has slowed a bit it is still happening if you know where to look but nymphing remains as effective as ever and is going to be the main way to fish through the rest of the season. We have had great success with caddis pupas, stoneflies, and tungsten flies like Flashback PTs, Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs, Berry’s PCP and Firestarters. Steelhead are on the move, primarily hanging out in the lower stretches around Maupin but there are some being caught higher up. If you’re wondering when the prime time to schedule your trip is, all of October is going to be your best window. Classic Steelhead flies like the freight train, lady carolyn, skunks, and streetwalkers will be the go-to!
