River levels best for fishing are at or below 3,000 cfs, and the river is currently running around 5,000 cfs at the gage in Mahama. Just over 500 summer steelhead have passed above Willamette Falls as of April 6, but the run has started to pick up in the past week. The first few dozen chinook have also been counted at Willamette Falls. Large numbers will begin to arrive in the basin starting in May.
Fishing for steelhead is open year-round, but the use of bait is not allowed between Nov. 1 and April 21.
