On April 22, DWR's warm-water fisheries coordinator, Drew Cushing, fished Willard Bay and sent this report: The water temperature was 59°F in the morning and 62°F when I left. It was a blue bird kind of day, a slight breeze at times a few clouds once in a while. There were three of us and we caught 30-40 crappie (and kept three limits). The fish were mostly between 12-14 inches. They look to be a week or two pre-spawn and definitely starting to move into potential spawning sites. We used white jigs, both curly tails and tubes with a red jig head. We caught fish by drifting with the breeze and had rods set up with about five feet of line under a bobber and then rods set up with just a jig. As you drift you continually hit schools of fish that were active. Look for changes in depth, like humps or depressions. The fish were schooled up in these areas.
